Care to Haggle
  • Large mid 19th century decorative folk art carved slate panel profusely decorated with geometric circles containing plants and flowers and a bird in flight to the center circle. Circa 1840.
Examples such as this were often made by the Quallymen of the Ogwen Valley in Gwynedd and indeed other quarries in Wales. The intricate carvings, typically depicting the zodiac, birds and plants, seem to be restricted to an artistic high point among the workers between 1823 and 1845. These unique carvings give us an insight about what things the quarrymen valued and enjoyed.

Similar pieces of carved slate from North Wales were exhibited in the British Folk Art exhibition at Tate Britain in 2014 and are illustrated in the accompanying book.
