A 19th century Victorian fireplace surround, in beautifully figured Italian Bardiglio marble and retaining a restrained architectural design typical of the period.
The surround is formed with broad, substantial jambs supporting a deep rectangular mantel shelf. Each jamb is embellished with a projecting shaped corbel, simply moulded and terminating in a pointed pendant detail, giving the fireplace a strong architectural presence without excessive ornamentation. Stepped foot blocks complete the base of each upright.
Above the opening is a wide, panelled frieze. The stone displays particularly striking natural figuring, with charcoal-grey and almost black veining flowing across a softer silver-grey ground. The variation between the individual pieces gives the frieze considerable depth and character.
Bardiglio is a marble traditionally quarried in the Carrara region of Italy, prized for its distinctive grey colouring and dramatic darker veining. Its cooler palette makes this surround particularly versatile, equally suited to a traditional period interior or as an architectural focal point within a more contemporary scheme.
As an antique piece, there are naturally variations, minor marks and historic signs of age and use throughout, all consistent with its period and material.
