A handsome 19th Century Victorian fireplace surround in well figured white Carrara marble. The surround has a substantial mantel shelf with an ogee moulded edge, which is supported by a pair of architectural jambs. Each jamb is decorated with deeply carved vertical fluting, divided by projecting moulded interruptions, and further recessed arched fluted detailing to the square capitals. Stepped mouldings beneath the shelf and boxed plinth blocks at the base give the piece a strong, well-proportioned appearance. A broad, unadorned frieze spans the opening. Circa 1880
